Searching Documents

Using West km, you can easily search for documents using terms and connectors or natural language searches. Click the Transactions tab at the top of the page.

Type in the search box to search the full text of West km documents using either a terms and connectors or a natural language search. Select where you want to search using the Library Groups (All) button. This allows you to restrict your search to particular groups of documents. Click the link below the search box to switch between a terms and connectors search or natural language search.

The Results List displays the results of your search. Use the View and Narrow options on the left to narrow your search results. You have the following search options:

• Search Using Natural Language Queries (see Searching Using Natural Language Queries for more information).
• Search Using Terms and Connectors in Queries (see Searching Using Terms and Connectors in Queries for more information).
• Search Using Field Specific Queries (see Searching Using Field Specific Queries for more information).
• Search by Citation (see Searching by Citation for more information).
• Search Using KeySearch (see Searching Using KeySearch for more information).
• Search West km Documents on Westlaw (see Searching Documents on Westlaw for more information).

Entering Dates in Queries

In searches, both 4 digit years (2012) and 2 digit years (12) are recognized. Dates are recognized when entered in any of the following formats:

Common Words Not Searched in Queries

These common words are not searched unless they are included in a phrase. Search for a phrase by placing it in quotation marks (see Searching Using Terms and Connectors in Queries for more information).

Equivalent Search Terms for Jurisdictions

Some terms automatically retrieve alternative forms or equivalent terms. If you search using one of the terms from either column in the table listed below, West km reads it as equivalent to the others in that row and retrieves all terms.

• You can turn off the automatic retrieval of equivalent terms in a Terms and Connectors query by placing the # symbol in front of the term. For example, to retrieve Kent but not Kentucky, type #kent.
• Punctuation is not considered part of the search term, so abbreviations entered with periods and without spaces (e.g., no.car) retrieve all variations of an abbreviation (e.g., No.Car., No. Car., and No Car).
